FAITH LEADERS, REP. LUIS GUTIERREZ COME TOGETHER IN OAKLAND TO CALL ON PRESIDENT FOR ADMINSTRATIVE RELIEF FOR
IMMIGRANT FAMILIES
 
Oakland, CA–Rep. Luis Gutierrez (D-IL) will join over a thousand community members from Alameda and Contra Costa County to highlight immigrant testimonies and to call on President Obama to halt unnecessary deportations which tear families apart. Rep. Luis Gutierrez has taken hs “Change Takes Courage Campaign” across the country to call on President to take action.  The event will take place at the Cesar Chavez Education Center Gym (2825 International Blvd., Oakland, CA 94601) and will begin at 6:30 p.m.  Rep. Gutierrez will be available for questions after the event.

As part of the meeting’s agenda, legislation at the state level will be underscored as an example of values driven immigrant policies.  Some of the legislation which will be discussed include AB 1081 which would allow local counties to opt-out of the S-Comm program which has deported thousands of non-criminals across California. Also to be highlighted is AB 1389 which will be voted on in committee this coming Tuesday.  AB 1389 is a bill regarding sobriety checkpoints and towing which would clarify the law as it relates to civil rights.  Community residents will come together to tell their stories and take action.

The event is organized by PICO East Bay which includes: OCO-Oakland Community Organizations, BOCA-Berkeley Organizing Congregations for Action, CCISCO-Contra Costa Interfaith Supporting Community Organization, and COR-Congregations Organizing for Renewal. Hundreds will bus in to the event and over a thousand people are expected to participate.

WHAT: Action with Rep. Luis Gutierrez (D-IL) to call for administrative relief for immigrants.  Local Bay Area community will take action on pro-immigrant state legislation.

WHO: OCO, BOCA, CCISCO, COR, Rep. Luis Gutierrez, Offices of Barbara Lee, Congressman George Miller, Senator Boxer (will make statement), immigrant and non-immigrant community, students, and families.

WHEN: Thursday, April 28 at 6:30 p.m.
