Press Release:

Over 60 Local Property Owners Form

New Group Dedicated to Stopping

Eminent Domain Abuse

San Pablo, Calif. On Saturday, over 60 home and small business owners from across San Pablo joined together to form San Pablo Against Eminent Domain, a new organization dedicated to stopping the City Council from voting for the amendment to authorize the extension of the right of the Redevelopment Agency (RDA) to use eminent domain. The RDA considers 95% of the city to be “blighted” thus making it eligible for condemnation for private/public development.

The meeting was organized by a group of concerned local citizens, many who have spoken up at City Council meetings against the proposal that will be considered at an April 19th public hearing. The purpose of the group is to better inform the city of San Pablo residents about eminent domain.

Speakers informed the group about the documentation the city used to based their decision that 95% of the city is blighted, including the fact that the city of San Pablo was compared to Albany, El Cerrito, Hercules and Pinole, not their closest neighbor, Richmond, for home values and crime, which made San Pablo look much worse than it is.

At Saturdays meeting, attendees heard from Christina Walsh, who runs the Institute for Justices Castle Coalition, a nationwide network of grassroots activists dedicated to stopping the abuse of eminent domain.  IJ is a public interest law firm that represents property owners nationwide whose homes and businesses are threatened by eminent domain for private gain.  IJ represented Susette Kelo and her neighbors before the U.S. Supreme Court in Kelo v. City of New London; in the wake of that decision, IJ was instrumental in securing eminent domain reforms in 43 states, and currently represents a boxing gym in National City, California.  Walsh travels the country educating and organizing communities to successfully fight illegitimate landgrabs. Members of Open Martinez, who are also fighting redevelopment in Martinez, came to share information and video the guest speaker.

Our next meeting is Sat. April 17 -10:30am  2025 Rumrill Blvd. (near Brookside Dr.)
